(I don't know who Kevin is, but I googled his phone number before I called and it hit on a thread on here selling a sheet of HDPE.)

Seriously though, I've called over a dozen people today and about half of them answered, most of them said their car had sold, including Kevin.

That reminds me of a personal laugh i had, at 1 of my bosses. He complained that he had put an add,several time in Craigslist, with No response! What he fails to understand, is, not everyone looks everyday, & if you don't renew your add every 2 days, it gets so FAR, down the list, very few people would EVER, see it!:lol: He's too cheap, to put an add in the local papers, & won't even list with the Employment Center, believes that people drawing un-employment, Don't want a job! :shaking:
 
He's right to a point....most people don't want a job.

To the OP: I called a guy in Greenville, NC about a set of tires (weeks ago) and he said they had sold. I can do a Craigslist search right now and the ad is still up there. It has a tendency to piss me off when they won't delete the ad!
 
I continually call them, and act surprised and disappointed when they tell me the item sold.
 
Related to this - I have found an amazing number of CL ads over the past year or so that when I respond via e-mail (often only means offered), I get zero response from the seller. This has happened to me I would bet 60% of the time lately. I thought I was doing something wrong, so checked my spam folder, junk folder etc, nothing - just no response. Why the hell are people listing stuff if they don't respond? Not like the ad is pulled right away either, like I just happened to coincidentally call when it was just sold. Maybe this is related to the jokers having sold and not pulling the ad like this thread suggests but man I can't figure it out and it's frustrating when people don't respond :mad:

Or the ones that say 600 obo and you offer 550 and they get pissed. If you need 600, say 600 firm.

Tried to buy tires from a guy yesterday that did this.

My feeling is that alot of people are just lazy and don't bother to respond b/c it's already sold or something.
Not very considerate IMO, it's only takes 5 secs to hit reply and type "Sorry, it's been sold".

That or people may not believe you are a real, interested person?
Not implying you specifically may not do this, or are a yahoo, but I make it a point to use proper grammar and punctuation, and even write a couple of sentences to (hopefully) give the impression I'm an intelligent person and actually care about this transaction.
Personally I rarely respond to emails w/ half-assed grammar, incomplete sentences etc.

I've found a high correlation between the time people spend writing their email and how likely the transaction is to follow through.

I had this problem when I was looking for a place to rent in Boone several years ago. I got 1, maybe 2 replies out of the 30 or 40 emails I sent, and one of those was the old "I am on military leave, I will mail the keys once I receive a deposit".

I've never personally purchased anything from CL, but a friend of mine is having twins and recently purchased some baby car seats off of it. They got 'em for 200, when together they would have cost 425 or something like that. He asked me to go with him to pick the up in case it was sketchy or something. Turns out the lady was real nice and lived out in Ballantyne.

Yeah, I totally agree. I don't think it's the 'not real' thing. I generally respond to these from my company e-mail address, signature line and all with local telephone number in the sig. I may not be Shakespeare but my grammar isn't likely to be mistaken for the nigerian Sheik looking to buy the prince a new Mercedes and I've never said to anyone I'll send a check for 5K for something that costs $50 and if they would kindly send me a check back for the difference :rolleyes:. I don't get it, and it seems to have gotten much worse in the past year or so. I've bought and sold a fair amount of stuff on CL over the last few years and with pretty good success.

The funny one is recently I listed a Ford 302 on the Raleigh and GSO CL sites. I got a response asking if it was still available, it looked legit. Like a dumbass I responded with my company e-mail, I guess unblinded (dumbass me). Now every morning I have 1-2 e-mails from the hot horney housewife and her close friends looking for a good time or from the flaming transistor or transformer (or whatever you call the him trying to be her kind) all with pics attached. Now whenever I see the 'Ford 302' in my subject line I have to kill the note before I open it and get fired for having inappropriate pics on my screen. WTF, just and honest guy here trying to sell a damned motor. I should copy the pics I guess and post up in the garage hotties link - some are pretty good eye candy (at least the chicks are but you gotta wade through the transistors to get to them :flipoff: ).
 
Then there's the guy, like today, that misrepresents his car through his pics. None of his pics showed the left rear corner of the car. He did have a pic zoomed in showing that that tail light housing was broken. So we ride an hour away, myself, and the wife and kids in tow, to look at and possibly buy his car. We get there and that whole corner of the car was smashed, and the trunk lid didn't line up exactly right. I offered him a grand less than what he was wanting and he declined, and said he could get that stuff fixed "real cheap." I told him to get it fixed and call me back or call someone else.

It wouldn't have been that big of deal had he said something about it beforehand either via his listing, pics, or our phone calls.
 
Or, like today's Craigslist asshole, the chick that sets up a time (wed at 8am) when you have to take vacation from work to check out her car. Then you call to get the address the day before and she says someone else is coming at that time, and will have to reschedule if they don't buy it first.
 
Or the guy who says he wants the wheels you have as soon as you pull them off. You communicate several times, set a time for him to pick them up, then go out and swap wheels in the rain. Then you never hear from him again.

I also love when you have something for sale for $600 and say "$600 firm, I will not take any less, I am very firm" and the first email you get says "$150 cash" :lol:
 
I look at it like this...CL is a free service, you get what you pay for...don't expect stellar customer service from the average joe. The 30 second phone call to find out something has been sold is no big deal...chances are if it's on CL, it's not the only item of it's kind and another will be posted shortly.

I get these a lot. I listed a set of long arms last month for 250 for all 8. Just wanted them gone. Had a guy email me saying since I was already taking such a hit "whats another 100 going to hurt" and offered 150 "cash". I asked what else he thought I accepted besides cash, then I told him to how to shove his own head up his ass . I love how these flying monkeys always emphasize "cash".

I've posted about 200 different things and delete my post after a sell. just had a guy call about a truck I sold over a year ago said it was just listed back on cl recently.
 
Damn, I've had peoole call about parts months or weeks after I remove them and a good bit of them admit to saving the # to see if I was desperate to sell yet

Just had an asshat today back out 40 minutes before he was to come buy a trans from me. I rearranged my whole damn afternoon to get free to meet the guy when it was convenient for him. Been talking to him for 3 days about it, not like it was a snap decision. I guess I should be happy, at least I found out before I left work early.
 
I sell a lot of stuff on craigslist. Don't even get me started on tire kickers and bsers. Just stops a YJ on there, had a ton off phone calls, set up a time to meet with three people, all no shows. Beyond annoying. Had a similar situation with a lift kit for a full size Chevy. Guy called me for a week about it, kept saying he wd gonna get the money, after the 4the no show within a week finally told him I was done messing with him. There's a lot more similar stories but those stick out.
 
I troll around Craigslist quite a bit looking for deals. I happened accross an ad for a 1950's Willys M38a1 tub that was rusted up pretty good. The guy was located in my town, but the ad was a month old and he said in it, "last chance to buy for $100 before it goes to the scrapper". He had a lot of tire kickers and even someone come look at it and nit-pick it because it was missing this and it was rusty there - what do you expect for $100 Jeep tub from the middle of last century? I offered him $50 since that's what I had and he agreed. He could get more from scrap, but he wanted to see someone use it. It's beyond restoration, but I plan on using it to build my rat rod (eventually!)

I saw one just this morning that said"going to the crusher in a week so if you want parts you better call now" but I gaurantee if I called and offered him crusher price for his parts he'd get all pissy about it.Another one I like is "today only" when truth be known they would still be willin to take that much tommorow,or three weeks from now.
