Hi All,
I'm passing along some info for a recently arrived pest that is infesting our Crape Myrtles. It's called Crape Myrtle Bark Scale and it's ravishing Crapes all over the South and Southeast. If left alone it will devastate the Crape Myrtles. The best treatment is an application of a systemic insecticide soil drench using Dinotefuran or Imidacloprid. Another or additional method for light infestations is using Horticultural Oil mixed with Bifenthrin on the entire surface of the bark including any pruning cuts and damaged bark. Even small infestations will grow rapidly.
I've been hearing for years that it is coming to our area but have not seen it until this year and it is now everywhere! I am including a link from Clemson University explaining it. It is best to have your trees treated by a professional pesticide applicator.
If you choose to treat your trees, try to get your supplies at a knowledgeable supplier, either a pro store or a quality home and garden type store or general Hardware store where the associates are knowledgeable about the issue. Home Depot and Lowes may not be your best bet for this but read up on the issue and get educated.
