Man it sounds metal in a blinnder def not drive shaft or motor of tens mount . I've heard shift linkage from transfer case can make the sound or rear dif. But drive train fills solid . 2005 lj please any info will help

Well... does it make the sound all the time? Does it change with engine RPM or with wheel speed? Is it different in reverse or in 4wd?

Shifter linkage isn't going to make noise on its own.

Answers to @shawn 's questions will help in diagnosis. I had a diff that chewed up the spider gears bad. It was an awful noise if I let off the throttle, and not so bad if I gave a little throttle to keep it under load. Open up the diff and take a look.

When I push in clutch noise goes away . Only makes sound in 1 2 3 gear . New clutch last year and trans shifts smooth. There are tons of video of jeeps making same noise on you tube but no info on fix.

You tube 1999 Jeep Wrangler metal rattling noise if you want hear what it sounds like. It's driving me freaking nuts. I'm ordering a Novak 4wd shift kit tomorrow all info I've found says that's the culprit just hard to believe that's it.

Don't you have a different trans than a 99 Wrangler?

By the way, was the throwout bearing replaced with the clutch, and is the new clutch aftermarket?

I'm guessing throwout bearing, or mainshaft or countershaft bearing depending on the shaft layout.

If the noise goes away in 4th gear you have counter shaft bearings in the transmission gone. In 4th gear only the main shaft has a load. Best to put a bearing and syncro kit in it.

I had throw out replaced with clutch and fly wheel resurfaced . How much is a counter shaft bearing replace? I know it's a different trans then the 99 but it's the same sound. I have the 6 speed trans .and its a aftermarket clutch.

Have you checked the u-joints and CVs in the drivelines?
