I didn't see a good place for this but I learned today that I have a STEP family member paying $7k per month RENT on a house that he can't afford. SEVEN THOUSAND IN RENT? What in the ever loving hell could anyone be thinking to pay anything close to that?

Is it like a massive 5k sq foot mansion?

I mean I can see some situations where this is reasonable to do... but they all assume the person is making a shitpile of money and its a temporary situation

Crazy
crazy stanley kubrick GIF

If you can float $7k/month in rent, it has to be a choice (for some reason).....clearly you are financially stable enough to just pay a mortgage....right?

I have friends waiting on a couple specific houses in a particular school district to go on the market, until then.....they rent in said district.

A lot of corporations will rent them to move high end employees into the area needed.

Its not always sensible though.
What if you're only going to be there for 6 months?

For example some guys go and work on a project in an area for a year then move elsewhere after its over

yep, the corporation has a lease for a year or more, they use it as temp space for people moving into the area for 2-3 months at a time

5K sq ft house in a regular neighborhood that I do work in. Just crazy

The company I left here in VA builds multi family buildings in DC. The penthouses would typically go for 15-20k a month and were always the first to be leased.
I've done a few recently where the going rent is $4k, penthouses are north of $10k. Charlotte, Durham, and Raleigh.....

To go back to the question; it’s Keeping up with the Jones’ at any expense. That’s my guess.

Depends how much you're making a month.
VP at my corp is there for 2 years on a fixed duration contract so he rents. His monthly apartment bill worth way more than 7k$.
Guy is making about 750k/year and if you look at ratios, he is still spending way less than me in percentage of income.

Soooo, how much is your step family member taking home?

I’d still say, what’s the point?

But hey, to each their own.

I can live at my current means, save the extra and retire for good at the end of those 2 years. Thats what I have always said, if I'm CEO/Director its not to be there for long, its to get out as quick as I can, but I can't deal with the politics.

What is the point of having money if you're not spending it?
It's all in your priorities

A guy A few houses up from me has a circle driveway, a 3 car garage, and tons of room to park his cars. I'm not sure whats in the garage but he has over 20 cars in the circle driveway and around the back of the house. These cars range from a Bentley SUV, a Lambo, a ferrarri, a cybertruck, a RR Culligan, AND a Ghost, to a couple of mustangs. I've no idea if he's renting the house or owns it (it's for sale now) or if he's leasing all these cars or owns them. More power too him either way. Just not where I'd focus all that money if it were me.

But in RQ's situation...knowing the person, and the circumstances, I think it's a shame. Unfortunately though, most people have to learn everything the hard way. Whereas, few will listen and take advice BEFORE things turn hard for them.

There is that. But like I said, to each their own.

I’d rather live in a dump and travel the world if those were my options. Do something for me instead of impressing others with my domicile.
To each their own. I'd rather have a thousand acres and a dirtbike and an excavator and be dead broke and never leave. :D

I have traveled all over the world and it is fun and nice to see sights but I am always ready to come home. The older I get the more of “I love NC and don’t like crowds so I will just go to the beach/mountains for the weekend” kind of person.
