I am looking for a GPS unit that does turn by turn street navigation and can be used for off road trail maps and navigation. So far I have found nuvi 500, Magellan Crossover, and a Lowrance XOG that offer these features. Has anyone used one of these models or know of another unit that will do these things?

I've got a Magellan Crossover (2500t I think). Overall it works well, but there are a few gripes we have about it.
1. Our maps are outdated by a few years, which really sucks, but isn't a fault of the GPS.
2. When you zoom out, the streets and towns aren't labeled, so it isn't very helpful.
3. When you search, you have to have the exact address.
4. The timezone is off by 1 hour, and I can't figure out how to fix it.

GPS functionality is pretty good. It gets signal fine, computes quickly, has a good display, is easy to read, is easy to use. Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

I have read the same thing about the map updates on the Magellan and also worry adout road updates for the Lowrance because it looks like they have quit making most of there turn by turn street navigation units. Does anyone know how the Nuvi updates are?

I have a Nuvi 650, I guess it will be 2 years old this Black Friday.
Unless something has changed recently, Garmin only releases maps once per year, and you have to pay for them :-(. So my map is 2 years old...
I'm sure the SW has changed since then, so i should probably refrain from comments relating to that.

TomTom has some kind of crazy system where users can "fix" the map and update, you can update anytime... kind of like the Wikipedia of GPS lol.

The last Garmin I bought and registered on the site gave me the option of lifetime map updates for not much more than a 1 year update.

they also give you 1 free upgrade within 60 or 90 days of registering. Depending on when the new maps cameout and how long your unit has set on a store shelf this may or may not matter

Not the same model, but I also have a Magellan, and had the same problem. Downloaded and installed the latest firmware...and then TZ was on the menus. Must have forgotten some stuff in the first version.

Also fixed a lot of other little issues (the model I got had a bunch of not-so-good reviews, but the firmware update pretty well took care of everything I read about).

I also a a XOG I use in the car. Have downloaded topo maps to it for UNF and other places I frequent, and it works great. Getting to be an older model, you can find on clearance. (Bass Pro had a while back for over half off what I paid). It's a good unit.

I just checked, and Magellan's site says I have the latest version of the firmware. Sucks.
