I made the August trip to Harlan for the annual CTB trip to one of the southeast’s premier OHV parks! I had not been to Black Mountain OHV Park since April 2009 and boy has it changed!

Most of the tried and true obstacles that have been left alone are now almost impossible to do. The first and last ledge on Lower Damnation has eroded to the point I can’t see anyone making it all the way through without winching! The Lion’s Den exit is getting close to the same, parts of Mason Jar have eroded making winching a probability instead of a possibility, the Big Step on Grace Rocks has been eaten out and is about impossible, the Upper Rock Garden has toughened up and Jager could also be impossible for all but the 44”+ tire crowd!

On the other hand, rocks have been added to the Rail Bed waterfall making it a bit easier, the exit of Lower Damnation onto Trail 12 has been made easy due to a culvert installation, the exit for Your Turn has been closed and a new, graded exit added for both Your Turn and Crawford’s Cry.

There are also several new trails that have recently been opened. Killin Time is a continuation of the Lower Rock Garden that comes out on Trail 12. You can continue on across Trail 12 onto Lower Profanity which is new also. You can now also run from the entrance of Your Turn, through Crawford’s Cry an on to the Middle Fork Playground via a new trail cut between Crawford’s Cry exit and Middle Fork. There is also a new, high challenge rock climb on the right of the main road entrance that goes all the way up to White Tail Camp! Lots of new trails available and more to come from what I hear!

I took my newly acquired ’97 ZJ up for a break in run and it didn’t disappoint me at all! The cush, coil ride, AC on demand, power windows and roomy interior made for a very enjoyable trail experience while the V8 power, automatic transmission and locked front and rear axles enabled me to go about anywhere I wanted to! The 33” AT tread tires need to be traded for a more aggressive, possibly smaller tire and I’ll add some rocker guards but over all I was very pleased with the way it performed!

We had a group of nine rigs which included upnover, 3DCRAWLER, 89wrangler, lockedup5, LARRY SMITH, JC and Nate Design, all from NC4x4. Chip’s new 4 speed Atlas worked great, lockedup5’s new on board welder setup was used several times and 3DCRAWLER’s newly installed suck up winch worked good as well!

We ran most all of the main obstacles and had a great weekend with mostly minor damage. Chip had a front driveshaft and rear pinion nut issue that was taken care of, 89wrangler only suffered a loose u-joint strap on his front driveshaft, I had the rear track bar bracket break (lockedup5 welded it with his new on board set up but after it broke again I ratchet strapped it together and it held back to camp) and Nate Design went through 3 trailer tires which slowed his weekend down quite a bit.

The only major breakage was on Larry Smith’s rig. He sheared all 4 of the upper studs on his passenger side steering arm! Five hours later he drove it out of the trail! We had to take the steering arm off, back to camp to drill and screw extract the studs, by FRANK’s (fourth house on the left after you cross the RR tracks heading to the trailhead, garage has a large FRANK’S sign, if you need anything he probably has it) to pick up some studs and cone washers, back to Lower Damnation to re-install everything only to find out that the bearing retaining pin on the steering arm had broken off too. Chip broke out his Ready Welder and burned the pin back on the arm, Steve,89wrangler, used his humongous file to smooth it all out, Larry installed everything and drove it out! A long but successful and very fortunate repair!

I can’t wait until next time to go back! No telling what will have been added by then but there are lots of good things in store for the park and I think it can only get better as the new Parks & Rec Commission continues to add improvements. If you have never been to Black Mountain OHV Park in Everts, KY, I highly recommend it as a destination for all rigs, from the heavily modified and purpose built buggies to stock 4x4 rigs right off the showroom floor there is something for everyone!

A few more things to add.

I had a noise I thought was binding in my front CV, it got worse and worse! Nursed it all day and brought it back to camp to change to my spare. Spare to short! No one had the right size tube or pipe. But before that, We were looking to see where mu noise was and Steve noticed a problem with my rear pinion nut. It as off, the yoke was barely on, and you could see the bearing. For those who don't know, the nut is a 1 1/2", and no one has one on the trail! With two pair of channel lock pliers, it went back on, mostly.
Back at camp, i asked everyone, no socket, went to the Dairy Hut because they seem to know everyone. While there it hit me, FRANK!
Went over and borrowed a socket and ratchet in the 3/4" size. Got it snagged down good. On to the Front. I am ashamed to say I didn't have the metal I needed to fix it.
Back to Franks. We searched high and low, nothing, he got on the phone, and found something, WENT after it!, but to be honest, I would have cut my rear and used it first. As I was taking it off the Jeep to become the donor, in rolls Frank! He has two pieces to select from. I chose one, and settled up. Frank rescued us three times this trip! Me twice, and Larry once.
On another note, still about Frank. He is one of two paid maintenance guys for the park.
These guys have been busy. They work 4 10 hour days working on the park. But, it's not enough. Too many acres for two guys. So here's a challenge. Organize a group, a club, or you and a buddy, and get in touch with them and plan a work day. The park is improving, it's cleaner, but I still saw much trash, but even more needed than a clean up is some cutting back of the easier trails, so more people can enjoy the park.
Talking to Franks partner, there is more to come, even with the addition of the new trails within the park, there are also more lands coming to ride and develop! This is going to be the biggest baddest place in the part of the world!
Some other additions is they are currently building offices on both the Putney side and the Evarts side as information and pay booths. Currently there is no one checking people for passes except on Saturday. These will be open more often, collecting more fee's to aid in the development of the park.
Folks, we have a great thing going here. I am excited in seeing what else will be coming from Harlan County and Black Mountain recreation!

I don't think Frank is on this board, but I will tell everyone, he is THE go to guy in the area. Thank you Frank for all you did for us!

Sounds like a good trip. I'm glad I got to try the stuff before they made it easier. Last time I was there everything was getting ate up. Also great to hear they are adding new trails. Makes me want to go.

The only thing I saw that may be easier, is the waterfall @ Railbed. A couple big flat rocks at the bottom. IMHO, everything else is HARDER!

Man, what a awesome trip. The weather was perfect, the trails were great with minimal dust, and the company was second to none. The last pic JC posted was actualy the wife on the rock garden :driver: I will try to get my pics up tomorrow evening. A littel more carnage was Chip's trailer tire that shreaded on the way home. But 20 minutes later, back on the road, He and Leslie looked like a nascar pitcrew! Great meeting all the new folks!

Thanks for the great write ups guys. All I can say about the ride is it was AWESOME!!!! I thrashed the five pretty hard a couple of times and lost oil pressure a time or two. I can't believe I got it on the trailer under it's own power after looking at some of my video tonight. I'm just thankful my front R&P stayed together after the pieces I found in the grease Wed evening. I also got a little rock rash I need to try and buff out this week. This was my first trip there but won't be my last cause did I mention it was awesome. We also had a great group of guys and gals and the cutest little 10 month old. I think she had a good time too. I was jealous of her cause she had some good looking pizza for lunch on Sat. but I couldn't have any. (to much cholesterol.) I just want to say thanks to everybody there for making this a trip to remember.

To Clarify, Kenneth is new to a lot of trails and I have had the pleasure of showing him around some. He has asked many times if I thought he could do it, so I say, I have seen Sammy's do it. I don't see many CJ-5's, with stock axles, locked, and stock wheel base, on the trail that often, so I use Sammy's as a comparison.
Kenneth will hammer on it, and I am amazed that it goes as good as it does. I will only admit once publicly, He show me up on a few obstacles!
As far as buffing out, that I will have to see, as the sheet metal was crunching, I was filming and hearing Yeeee hawwww. This Jeep was near perfect a year ago, now,.... it has many customized trail touches. But in all, he enjoys that thing more than a lot of folks with full blown buggy's!

Here are a few more pics.

Chip, you got any pics? I saw Leslies flash quite a bit!

Thanks for the write up and pics guys. We've got a helluva crew going up this wknd. Maybe I'll quit being lazy and post up some pics and vids when we get back.

Guys, After I left Greensboro, borrowed a spare from JC, I lost my 4th trailer Tire. They were only 2.5 year old Carlisles and had EXcellent Tread. My jeep and Trailer only weigh in at about 5000lbs and the trailer and tires were rated to 7000 lbs. So can't say overloaded. So all in all, I lost 4 total tires in one weekend!!!! after I left JC's house I had a blowout 15 miles from my house... The other 3 I caught with just busted belts... So... I ordered 5 15inch wheels and 10 ply tires. Will get a friend to pick them up from Hickory whom I hope to see this Sunday.

My wife, My 10month old daughter, and I had a GREAT time even though we only rode the one day. Truck did good with the camper and the Trailer and the Jeep. Just have to slow DOWN. (another reason I can't believe the tires went) I was going slower than usual.
