whats the going price to rebuild a 12 valve cummins. its a 95 if it matters. had someone quote me $4K and was wondering if that was a decent price. also, where are some good shops that specialize in either cummins or diesel motors

For 4,000 I would just buy another one. I sold one (1995 motor, coincidently) a few months ago for 1800 bucks, only had 150,000 miles on it. Even if you had someone else do the labor, you'd still be well below 4,000.

What's wrong with yours?

it's leaking from everywhere imaginable and something on the front end is rattling. sounds like bearings. hasnt lost any power, just uses a lot of oil and smokes during idle. i want to replace the headstuds as well so i can eventually run twins

the only thing that concerns me with a used motor is that it would need rebuilding. at least if i have it rebuilt i know its done right

complete rebuild kits are in the range of $650, iirc. Also, are you pulling the engine yourself or having the shop do it? there's a lot of labor cost there

I bought the motor that's in my K30 from a fellow member in 2008 and haven't done anything to it internally. It takes 55lbs of boost on stock headbolts. Of course, it leaks oil too, but I'm not that worried about it. 12 valves are stupid easy to work on, if you have any mechanical know how, fixing most of it yourself shouldn't be much of a problem.

How many miles on your motor? Any mods done to it?

if i had a shop or room in my moms garage i would do it myself. cant do it in the parking lot at my condo. i've been wanting my own shop for a while and i'm almost tempted to have one built on the back side of our property since i am also planning on doing a 1 ton swap on my tj and currently have no where to work on it either. right now the engine has no internal upgrades. it has injectors, fuel plate and exhaust. it reads 256K but i'm pretty sure the guy i bought it from said that the engine was relatively new when i got it and it looked new but i let it sit for over a year and the seals dried up and it started leaking pretty bad. i want to build it to haul a decent sized gooseneck and also maybe for racing since its no longer my dd.

Thats probably in a decent range counting machine work, covers hickups. I would think that would be at the upper end though. Were finishing a cr job up next week and out the door the customer is paying 3800.00 including cam, turbo, tappets and all the goodies.
