Hey friends, please excuse me skipping formalities--and possibly posting in the wrong forum.

I'm a long-term lurker, first time poster. I come to you as I currently have freon spewing from one of the hoses from the underbelly of my 86 4runner. In an attempt to swap out the center console with a tuffy box, I got a little careless and burst a hose. Does anyone have advice for *now* and what to do next?

Thanks!

Now that it's slowed, I have some additional questions.

Is there a good way to cap the lines that run to the center console pump, near the condenser? I'm not interested in keeping those lines, and have little need for ac this time of year. I'm likely to retrofit the whole thing before next summer, but just want to cap it off safely to finish installing my tuffy box.

I think you broke one or both of the lines to the rear heater. They have nothing to do with the Air conditioner as they were only used for heat. I'm not really sure where they are located, but I would start with the passenger side of the engine compartment.

are you sure it's AC and not coolant ? wasn't aware there was AC in the console, but I do know there was a heater option for the rear seats that resided in the console ( leave you with a shallow storage compartment, VS the deeper well for those with out the aux heat.

There are hoses that T off at the heater control valve, for the dash heat, remove the T', and reconnect the hoses to the pipes coming out of the engine., top off coolant and run the engine with heat on hot for a few minutes. It's a quick and easy fix, removing the heater core from the console takes a LOT longer

my '85 blew out the heater core in the console on a trip, not a fun time to deal with it ( sweet HOT steamy mess creeping up your side @ 70mph will get your attention quick )

That makes a lot more sense, especially given that it looks and feels like coolant...and after checking out the controls, you're right, there's only heat.

I'm guessing by console, you mean center console?

I do want to remove the heater there. I found this post about removing the heated center console: http://www.yotatech.com/f116/removing-rear-heater-234946/

Any reason to not give that a go?

Highlighted the bypass location (image from the thread posted above) for clarification... does this look right?

if you plan on keeping the heater in place, what you did was fine, but won't help your heat much if you leave it that way, as the coolant will bypass the main core in the dash.

I pulled mine when it went bad, it never got cold enough for me to worry about fixing it when it blew out.

I haven't done anything yet. Here's a picture of what I'm looking at coming out of the firewall.

The red and green arrows show the 2 tubes that run under the truck to the center console. I've also marked with boxes the 2 spots where they fork from the main lines.

What I'd like to do is just remove these from the whole scenario so that I don't have anything going to the center console, and can remove it. Thoughts on what to do?

yes, remove the T's, if I remember right, you can did it with out buying or adding more hose, you'll remove the T and a short section of his past the T, then re-connect the hose from engine to dash heater core

be careful, that core is 28yrs old, and pretty brittle, it won't take much to make it leak.

Alright, I've hit a bit of a blocker.

The T in green is actually a part of what I believe is the heater water control valve. Given that I want the front heat to still work, I'm not sure what exactly to do.
