Custom wheels from old split rim centers?

Working with 6 on 7.25 bolt pattern. Lots of older Military and assorted 1 tons came with this pattern. A new set of custom non split rims would set a fella back over a grand. So what's the possibilities of just cutting a set up for the centers to weld into something else? I know wheels need to be straight and all so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this approach? Of course swapping axles is an option but just about as costly.

One thought I suppose is to take a front or rear hub off to use as a jig for the center, maybe adjust it for backspacing.
