With things like this, I have to wonder - what happens when the battery dies prematurely while dude is out in the middle of nowhere carrying an extra 100 lb load?

according to the video on berkely bionics website a dead battery does not hinder its ability to support the load. it looks like the rig itself will support the load without a body in it, the battery is just for movement.
