d 44

Do you want the stock d44A or a d44...there is a difference. The d44A's came out of any 96-98 v8 grand cherokee i believe...someone correct me if i'm wrong. If you are eventually wanting to go the trail rig route with a locker and what not i would suggest not getting the d44A because there is hardly any support as far as lockers go (discontinued the aussie). It also has an aluminum center section which you can image wouldn't be to good on the trail. If any of this is wrong guys please correct me.

any rubicon had a d44 rear... some TJs also had them without being a rubicon, dunno years though...

i would stay away from the d44a...

you could also find a xj/mj d44 rear and weld the link tabs/buckets to it.... that or even an 8.8

for the 8.8 you'd need a bracket kit welded on. the ones commonly used for jeep swaps come out of explorers. 96 and newer had disc brakes, so they're more desireable.

ford 9" ftw. fuck an 8.8

got it on half price day at the u-pull-it. 50 bucks. it is the right track width for my cherokee. came with 3.70's, not enough but better than I had. gonna get some disks and throw it under. just finished cleaning up the third member and painted it.

John, I would agree with this. Good strong light weight axle. OR a waggy 44 (center pinion). If you go this rout yopu need to match axles for the lug patttern & gear ratio. I would do truck width It will do alot for stability in the rocks. Accending & decending ledges. Also for in the future look for some long chevy 1/2 ton rear springs. Keep the coil in front.

well the grand cherokees are coil all the way around... but you could change it to leaf in the rear if you really wanted i guess...

the only 9" that would be same width and bolt pattern would be one out of a car iirc, or an EB one might be the right width... either of these would require mounts to be made, just like using an XJ/MJ d44 or explorer 8.8, but the last 2 have the right bolt pattern for the front...

IMO, depending on how big youre wanting to go with this, id say get HP30 from a XJ and bolt it in, as well as, a XJ/MJ/TJ d44 or explorer 8.8 for the rear... these would do you fine upto ~36" tires id say, which requires a decent amount of lift on a ZJ

if wanting to go fullwidth and bigger later on, then go with a HP44 front and 9" rear... and thatd probly handle 38s fairly easy... if bigger then that is your plans, just swappin the rear axle isnt gonna get you anywhere now...

well the only bolt on upgrade would be a TJ d44... but there are a few companys that sell bracket kits for the d44, 8.8... so that you can bolt them into the jeep. thats if you cant/dont wanna make them yourself...

ive done a few 8.8 swaps in TJs, and its not hard... 1 reused the stock bracketry, and itd be alot easier and beneficial in the long run to have made/gotten new stuff
