Ok, I have a front Dana 60, and a rear 14 bolt. Both geared 4.56:1, both with Detroit lockers.

I have found after a few trips out on the new to me 44's, is that I would like to be lower geared. I have read in the past that because of the 14 bolt, I can only go as low as 5.13:1, but, they have in recent past started making 5.38:1 I think, there were problems with them to begin with, but now are OK to use and abuse.
My questions are:
Can I use the same carriers to go as low as I want to go?

Can I use same locker?

will that little of difference make a difference in what I feel in gearing
TIA

I don't see it making that much of a difference. The gears should fit on your carriers, 5.13 or .38. Got room for a doubler?

JIm, Yes I have room, I currently run a T-176 and a Dana 300 with 4:1's what are my options for a doubler?

Chip,
You can go 5.38s on the 60 without a problem with the carrier you have. However, if the rear is actually a 4.56s and up carrier you will not be able to go to 5.38s because they are thick gears and will only work with a 4.10 and down carrier.

As for the doubler.......you could easily do a 231/300 doubler for a reasonable amount which would give you another 2.72:1 in front of the 4:1 300. That would definitely be a cheaper option for you even after you build the additional mount and have the driveshaft shortened.

If I can help you out with this let me know, we have worked with a couple of the kits at this point and they work pretty well.

Give me a shout.

Oh Jim, Pahlezzz LOL ok so you're not a Jeep guy. The T-176 is factory Jeep tranny. From later CJ-7's.

I just talked to Zuber and he is ordering me a kit to do the doubler. From how I understand it, it will give me what I need.
I can run the 231 on the good parts of the trails and not get left behind, and use em both for when I need the tires to crawl!
Just have to set the cases up(Zubers Job) and make new cross members (which I needed anyway) lengthen the front Drive shaft, and shorten the rear, which shouldn't be too much issue since my rear is already 48" long. The front being a PTO style shaft, so all in all, sounds like a solution to my problems.
Oh and forgot, redoing the shifters too.
I am stoked!

No, no, I'm so not a manual guy:lol:

Cool, I think you'll like that more than just the lower gears.

Theres alot of info on pirate about it. I've been reading it about it as wel for the last month or so and plan to purchase when I get the coin. People have reported back happy, I haven't heard of any problems. The doubler yields alot deeper reduction without the price of setting up the diffs. I'm sure you'll enjoy it Chip, I look forward to checking it out!

T176

The 176 is a decent transmission, but I don't know if I'd go through all that effort around one. Is there any way to use a T18 in there?

This is going to be good, this rig will be unstoppable now! Which kit did you get? DD Machine? I've been trying to get Austin to pull the trigger on that setup for a while now :) I'm stoked too :)

Well, lets see. My odometer quit working about 7 years ago, My T-176 is one of only a few original parts on my Jeep. It had 240K on it when it quit registering. I run 32" BFG All terrain's as a DD and trail rig for 8 years, 35 boggers with 1/2 tons and ARB's for 6 years, 39.5 Boggers with the one ton's for nearly three years, and now the 44's TSL's. I have went thru 4 engines, two transfer cases, one of which was rebuilt with the 4:1's put in. Four different diff changes, and so far I have put the front output bearings in the tranny. For me, I will keep it. I do wish I could put a T-18 in it yeah, but that's more adapters to buy for my 300.
I wouldn't mutter a word it it blew up tomorrow, except for trying to find another one.
