Hey Guys,

I have a 88 yota runner and was wondering how I was going to set this thing up to be mostly a D/D, but also go offroad sometimes.

I am running 35x14.50x15's swampers on 15x10 Allied bead locks.

the 5.29 gears for the axles are the gear of choice for on road driving and I was thinking of going dual cases in the future. Is this all I would need to do? I know I would need to get the d-shafts modified, but am I missing something as far as the drive line is concerned?

Thanks,
Dave

If you really wanted the best of both worlds you could:
Solid axle swap the front
Run CroMo axles, and long fields
Lock it with ARB air lockers or another selectable locker to save on tire wear.
The dual cases would be a nice feature for sure.

You'll also have to cut a hole in the floor for the second 'case, but other than that, I'd (I'm) look for an e-locker for the rear end. Makes it streetable and dramatically increases off road worthiness.

Total chaos not SAS for daily driver unit, selectable locker, front and rear bumpers and sliders as well as a winch.
5.29 are a good ratio for 35s+ are you running an auto transmission or manual.
My 88 is my daily driver and is curnetly my only wheeling rig

I did not realize cause I can't read but the first 3 post all say selectable locker.....so that should be your 1st choice for street and trail.
....I miss my e-locker.....btw they are basically bolt in any 8" 3rd.
there is a hi pinion version from the fj80.
Also the e-locker will work front or rear.

I'm getting an elocker for my hilux and was undewr the impression that you had to make a few mods to the housing to get it to bolt up, like building up the housing and drilling and tapping a hole for a bolt on the elocker third. Also it wouldn't go in the front of an 88 unless it's been SAS'd.

I guess I was not clear on that it is only for the 8" diff.

The mod is a little trimming on the flange and adding 1 stud.- pretty easy.

The flange huh? I guess I need to look this up, cause I'm gonna be doing it here in a few weeks.
