What are the specs. for tightening down the wheel bearing adjustment nut on an '89 Jeep Grand Waggy D44? I've read anywhere from 50 ft./lbs. to 100 ft./lbs. Don't really want to guess seeing as this will eventually be fully rebuilt and sitting under my truck. Also read the wheel bearing nut (outer one) is supposedly hand tightened. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Lurch

...anywhere from 50 ft./lbs. to 100 ft./lbs. ...

Hope that said inch-pounds!!

I use "weight-of-the-wrench" method. I will tighten fairly tight and loosen several times while turning the wheel. Then on the last cycle, Ill loosen it, then I let the weight of the wrench (or 1/2 inch drive ratchet) tighten the nut. Put the locking washer on, then tighten the outer nut pretty tight to lock it!

On my Ford 44, it's 160 ft/lbs on the outer nut and 50 ft/lbs then backed off a quarter turn on the inner.
