d60 vs 14 bolt

14 bolt is stronger in every way, and heavier, and bigger, so it cuts into your ground clearance, but that can be addressed. There are more options for gears and lockers for a D60, but there are a ton of options for both, so thats really not an issue. There are already several threads on here addressing the similarities and differences, and hundreds more on other forums throughout the internet.

Bottom line: 14 bolt is stronger, D60 is lighter and has more ground clearance. Which is more important? If weight and ground clearance is more important, get a custom Ford 9" with 35 or 40 spline shafts.

I greatly prefer the 14 bolts. They're much easier to work on internally, which is a big plus to me. They're easy to regear, parts are fairly cheap, and they're very abundant.

The 14 bolt has a 10.5" ring gear, removable pinion, and a 3 bearing pinion setup. It's one of the cheapest (1-ton) axles to buy a locker for, since it's a lunch box and not a full carrier replacement in most cases.

The Dana 60 is a 9.75" ring gear, 2 bearing pinion, non-removable pinion. For a front axle, the Dana 60 setup is great, but I just don't like to use them for a rear axle.

X2 shaved 14 bolt over a 60 any day of the week!!

In stock form the 14 bolt is about 50% stronger that a dana 60 rear just on axle shaft size. A dana 70 is slightly stronger than a 14 bolt.

Thanks I was wondering because I'm new to this stuff as I've said in other post but I was reading different articles on here and I had seen where different ppl said to use different shafts for there application andI'm going to do an sas soon and I was told to use a 14 bolt.

14 bolt is a rear application. D60 has a front application or a rear. Doing a SAS is typically a front, so you would be looking for a D60 front, passenger side pumpkin or driver side pumkin?

Yea I posted that and I have a 10 bolt rear so I need to get a 14 bolt rear for what I'm trying to do and I seen different things you can do so I was wondering which one was better
