is there any variation in the late model ford d60 fronts vs the later years leading up to 91? i know they ran the kingpin axle but is there anything specifically different besides bolt pattern ? or did metric pattern switch at 80?

They didn't change from 8x6.5 to 8x170mm until 1999.

78-79 Ford 60 = overpriced and not worth it unless you wanna bolt it up in a YJ.
80-85 = somewhat reasonably priced.
86-91= bastard year and odd inner shaft size, slightly more reasonably priced.
91-99= cheap and cool, ball joint.
99-04= cheaper and awesome but 8 on 170.
05+ cheap and awesome, strongest d60 ever made but difficult to swap into a rig. 8 on 170.

05+ SD60 is probably the best bang for the buck axle out there right now. I just hope to snatch one up for a rainy day before prices start going up.

Their shortcomings are more of a nuisance than anything. The casting can be cut away and welded back to expose enough tube for a drivers lower link mount and the hubs can easily be redrilled for 8on6.5. Patoyee had had a jig/template made up that I'm pretty sure he was going to be selling at some point for this. Those are its only real "issues". I won't even address the whole balljoint vs kingpin debate because it's like Ford vs Chevy.

The 05+ SD 60 can not be redrilled for 8x6.5, the hub is too large. The 99-04 however can be as the unit bearing is smaller to allow the room for the smaller bolt pattern. There's some good pics and info over in the SD 60 thread on Pirate.

So besides the availablity of 8 on 6.5 is there a problem with 8 on 170. I realized there are way more old/used 8 on 6.5 out there cause they were used on more stuff

I'm 8 on 170 and plan on keeping it. I'd love to run a 14 bolt again but the only thing to match the lug pattern of a 99+ front is a sterling 10.5. Not complaining, this axles is by no means a wuss.

I believe that the 05 up unit bearings can't be drilled to a smaller bolt size like 6x5.5. The 8x6.5 and 8x170 is ridiculously close to the same size so they will work.

Yeah, its 165.1 vs 170, so you're only talking 2.45mm per side, which is 0.096" or about 3/32". And if the hub is too big, you could likely turn it down a little to match the difference anyway. Older 1 ton stuff is around 5", so its not exactly small.

This is what I was referring to, not much room there for a smaller pattern even if its a small amount. I just hadn't seen where someone has re-drilled the 05+ yet. Not really sure why you would want to now that there are a lot more wheel options available.

You could always run adapters that go from 170mm to 6.5". Then you'd be able to use either bolt pattern wheels.

Nowadays you can buy any wheel in 8 on 170 just like you can the older 8 lug. Like mentioned.
You can always do like me and score a set of aluminum Excursion wheels and do a custom aluminum beadlock conversion on them. :D
