I have a D61 rear, I think anyways, it was free and geared decent so I am going to use it for the time being. Are the axle tubes the same size as a D60? I am going to put disk brakes on it. And what needs to be done to regear it? It is already has 4.10 gears but if I were to make any lower what would I need to do? I have heard talk about a spacer for something, but it has a limited slip in it now. So maybe its a different carrier and none of this applies.

Who knows, I just never had any exp. with a D61 rear before.

You can gear as low as 4.10 with the stock carrier on a 61. They were designed for on-highway trucks and vans that needed to run higher gear ratios up to 3.07. The pinion gear was moved over to compensate for the higher gears. If you want to go lower then 4.10, then you will have to use a d60 series 3 carrier, in combination with a ring gear spacer, i think Reider racing carries one, (and/or possibly thick gears). There have been guys that have run 6.xx gears in them with regualr d60 lockers.

Most dont like it because of the fact that with a spacer the ring gear doesnt contact the carrier.

Its not a bad axle because it has a beefier pumkin, generally the bottom side is relatively flat, the tubes are thicker, and they typically have bigger spindles to except 35 spline shafts.

Search pirate, they have alot of info over there. heres one link:

Ran a 61 rear for a while a couple of years ago. Larger tubes and brakes. I ran 7.17 gears with a ring gear spacer on the stock carrier. I have 1/4" and 3/8" Mr Gasket spacers around here somewhere,$20, if you want to come get em or I'll deliver for gas money :)
