pop and I didn't get along until i was a man. it was then he told me that if anything ever happened to him, come get his boat. i did, after he passed on, and there was no sign of any kind of "papers" for boat/trailer. how in the world do i transfer the prop. into my name? for trailer, can't i just title it as if i built it? any help outside of dmv, lawyers, and all that b.s. would be a great boost to my sanity.

IIRC you would need the executor(sp?) of your fathers estate to fill out a lost title form on his behalf and you should be able to get the title assuming he had one for it to begin with. Then you would go on about transferring the title into your name the standard way with the executor acting on behalf of your father.

pop was indigent. unless the executor(sp?) is the person who claimed his remains i don't think he had one. The twist in the whole thing is he was my stepdad. clerk of court said i would have to get all blood relatives to sign off on me having possesion of boat. The craziest thing of all is, we did not associate with many of his family. Feuds.

Check with the Clerk of Court -- they will have a record of who was executor--likely, the CoC was, or appointed someone within the court, as exector of record.

If his blood family is like some...you might have far less headache to contact them and ask who's driveway to drop it off in.

If you have possession, you can talk to the wildlife about titling an abandoned boat.

Yep. I suggest calling the NC Wildlife office in Raleigh and honestly explaining the whole situation to them. There is some process by which they will send a certified letter to the last known address of the last registered owner. If the owner doesn't dispute the registration transfer then they will award it to you. Maybe it's a little more complicated than that, but they are much easier to deal with and much more straightforward than the DMV has ever been.

The trailer might be more tricky, but used trailers pop up for $500 or less all the time if it comes right down to it.

According to our Vessel Registration group (I work for the NCWRC), you will need the Executor to provide a notarized bill of sale and a copy of his Testimitory (sp?), showing that they are the Executor of his Estate, in order to get the boat in your name.

If you have any other questions, you can call 800.628.3773 and speak to one of our customer support reps on the vessel side. Good luck.

What kind of boat is it?

If you have any mechanic friends, you can always drop it off to have it fixed. Have them pull a mechanic's lean on it, after 30 days they notify the last owner, he doesn't respond and it becomes theirs, then they can "sell" it to you. Just a shady way....

The trailer can be titled homemade, just has to be inspected by a cop
