Dakota cold start engine ticking

well i have a 1986 toyota pick up 4x4 with a 22re in it and i have to rebuild my motor it sounds like the one of the rod bearings or main bearings are bad which mean the crank is bad and the only way to tell is to drain the oil take the oil pan off and check each rod and see if it wiggles wear it is bolted to the crank if one of the rods shakes its a rod bearing if not he will have to take one brackets of at a time and see how many main bearings are bad Dakotas are bad about going bad is the ticking on the bottom or the top of the motor if it sounds worse at the bottom of the motor do what i said if not any thing could be bad in inside of the motor he will have to find where the noise is and go from there

vid. link dosen't work . possibly lifters bleeding down? does it go away shortly after starting?

I've heard that a lot of the Dodge motors in those Daks during those years had a slight ticking in the top end but they got plenty of miles outta the motor.

The sure way to find where it's coming from is to use an auto stethoscope (spelling?). Once you pin point the location, you can tear into from there. Hopefully its a valve spring, rocker arm, etc. something in the top end. You can fix that without tearing too far into the motor.

if it is a V8, only on start-up, my experience with my Mopar V8s is they all tick when they cold start. I was told it was the style lifters they use...they bleed down.

Of course, they did it since they were new! My 1500 now has 270,000 miles on it without any change!
