Like the movie Office Space the TPS BS is driving me nuts. The alert is on in the wifes 2010 Escape and it won't go off. She'll need tires soon and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to fix it before the tire place rapes us. I've never disconected the battery since we bought it and the tires are not low........anybody know what to do or try?

Tire Pressure Monitoring System ?

Define low, are you setting the pressures according to the door sticker or your comfort level ? 32psi has been a standard forever, but newer stuff can go higher.

the sensors in my work van trigger @ 45psi for the front and 62 for the rear. to program I have to do a key on/off thing and the horn honks for each wheel as the sensor is relearned for position and pressure ( deflate/inflate procedure )

there should be a relearn procedure that may require you deflate/inflate above/below XX and then twitch your nose, wiggle your toes and fart twice ( it seems that ridiculous sometimes )

find out if it can be programed using vehicle functions rather than a scan tool, if so buy new ones from a source of your choice ( if deemed to be needed ), have them installed when the tires are changed, then program yourself. If they refuse to install ( a good shop will remove them before removing tire anyway ) tell them you'll take your tire business elsewhere.

Discount tire offers a "rebuild" kit, which is a couple seals and new valve core ( $15 per wheel ), should be a good time to replace them, especially if the new sensors come with seals ( they should )

if it's a bad sensor, consider replacing all 4 or you may be doing this dance again when the next 3 crap out

Thanks for the info. we bought the thing w mismatched front and rear tires, same size ( factory size ) and very similar tread pattern and wear but the fronts are rated to 45psi, rear 40. I checked them several months ago on a hot day and all were 45, doorjamb says 32 all around, I set them at 35 and it seems to ride smoother, about a month later the light came on and 2 were down to 30- Michillans w some minor spiderwebing/dryrotting. The light has never gone off w any pressure changes so maybe it just needs resetting. I would prefer to remove them but I assume it's illegal? and w/o them the light will stay on? does the spare also have a sensor?..................anyway the wife just told me as long as the tires are OK she don't care about the stupid light! but I'm sure it will be an issue come tiretime. Sorry for so many questions.........

What type if vehicle? I had them on a fleet vehicle Dodge Caravan (2008 if I recall). I picked up the vehicle brand new from the dealer with 2.5 miles on it and within 35 miles, the light was on. Dealer checked them and tested air pressure. One was off by a pound, but they didn't think it would trip the sensor. They reset it, sent me on my way and it would go on and off a lot. Brought it back with 75 miles on it and they re-seat the tires on the wheels to see if there was a rim leak. They replaced all the sensors (had to order them). Fixed it for a little while and it came back. I drove it for a long time with intermittent light on. I think it finally went away, but I no longer have that job and corresponding fleet vehicle.
