a buddy of mine has a yj dana 30 with 4.88 gears and a lok rite and wants to know if the guts will fit in an 89 cherokee dana 30. it seems like it would be fine but i wanted to double check before we tore it down. also looking for opinions on lift kits for an 89 cherokee. nothing to expensive but he wants to run 33 or 35 inch tires. any thoughts?

as long as neither of the d30s are HP or both are HP then atleast the gears and lockers will swap.... if 1 is HP and 1 not, then you wont be able to use the gear set...

as far as lift goes, is he opposed to cutting the fenders? if not you could clear 33s or 35s with ~4" lift

I am pretty sure that the Xj 30 is high pinion so the gears probably will not fit, however the lockrite should fit fine.

I was pretty sure yjs never came with a high pinion dana 30, but maybe I'm wrong.

never mind, I just looked it up and YJs do come with the HP 30, so you are good to go.

i think he is going to run 33s and from what we have seen 3.5 in lift will clear 31s 4.5in will fit 32s and 6.5 will fit 33s-35s. he doesnt really want to cut fenders but will if it is a must. i think he has decided on the rough country 6.5in kit that comes with everything. anybody had experience with this kit? is this toooo much lift for 33s? it seems to be the most complete kit for the money. $995 for coil springs, upper and lower arms, pitman arm, trac bar, leaf springs and so on. other kits like the rc 4.5 kit does not come with the upper arms and some other things which seem to be necessary for that much lift. any opinions or experience u have had with your cherokee would be a big help. thanks

I would stay away from rusty's. I haven't had any good experiences with them and most of their products aren't that well designed. You get what you pay for. For short arm lifts RE tends to offer the most complete kits for the money, but there are other manufacturers of quality kits. For longarm lifts (better for 33"s and up) I personally like T&Ts Y-link system (have it in mine). REs is nice too, but costs more and has some disadvantages IMO. Clayton, BDS, Full-traction, and others also offer solid kits.

correct, no lift on unibody Cherokees.

I've heard a lot of negative about Rough Country, like the ride was stiff and flex was bad. Internet hearsay? sure, but enough to steer me away.
I found a Rusty's 3" lift used on this board. I installed it, along with RE1600 (IIRC) trac bar, it seems to ride fine, a little stiffer than stock, but doesnt bother me. The wheels I picked up have less than stock backspacing so they stick out further. Because of that, I have some wheel rub up front with 31s on it. I still havent had a chance to wheel this station wagon, so everything is highway-only observations.
