Alright, so i have done alot of researching on the most popular forum websites i could fine and people have had mixed emtions about doing this.

I currently have a 97 XJ with the non-vacuum front D30
and a ford 8.8 (Disc brakes and 4.10s) in the rear..
I want to to the cheap Dana 30 upgrade out of a older XJ with 4.10s so that i can have my 4wd back..

Now i have read that i can take my current 1 piece axle shaft and replace the dana 30 2 piece axle shaft with it. Giving me the Non-Vacuum axle... All i would have to do is remove the inner fork, and place a oil seal in the passenger side axle tube.. And then i can either remove the old Vaccum setup on the axle and replace it with a plate or i can simply keep it there and disconnect the vacuum lines. I would prefer not to do the $200.00 Cable posi-lock option, simply because i do not have 200.00 to blow on this axle build..

With this XJ being my DD/Trail Rig & Me being fresh out of high school, i need to have the safest and most effective way to get my 4wd back and be able to make it to Carolina Beach & Uwahrrie!! :)

Any help would be awesome!!
I'd really like to get the Jeep back on the Trail!!

Thank you for the posts!

Need to get an axle shaft from a Select-Trac XJ of about the same year. Then just need to remove the old shafts, the shit fork, and replace the inner seal wit the correct one like this one.

Edit: totally misread your post, still confused on what your asking but any older axle swap will be a downgrade as your yr XJ has a hp30 unlike older XJ's (pre 95) that had lp30's. If gearing is your only issue than just swap in a set of 4.10's rather than swapping out an axle.

Negative, all cherokee's/Comanche's used hp 30's except the 2000, 2001 models. The Renix era (90 and older) XJ/MJ's used Cad 30's all others used non Cad, one piece axle shafts.

Do the one piece shaft mod, it's cheap and effective.

i put the seal cr11800 in the passenger side of the pumpkin. works like a charm. i heard sticking the seal in the tube wasnt as good as an idea...

Awesome guys, thank you for the help! Now if i can find either axle, one with a disco or none disco.
I will keep y'all informed and do some posting!

Also, if anyone else has more install info!

The more the better!

92-99 front axles are non-disconnect, hp 30's. 95+ have the 5-297x joints in them. Thats the more desireable shafts to aquire. They can adquire 33's with finesse. The seals aren't "needed" but recommended with the one piece inner install. Warn has a block off plate where the vacuum connects to the housing, a good enough gasket seal will keep all the fluid in but can allow it to still leak where the outer shaft enters the axle housing. A reg check on the fluid should suffice or installing a close fitting seal on the outer side of the vacuum box, closest to the wheel, should keep the fluid in check. And the Warn block off plate does come with the seals. Ive done the conversion a few times on friends rigs.

I helped a buddy of mines do this on his disco YJ D30. We used a napa seal, heres the part number for the one that goes carrier side. Should be a direct fit.
NAPA 11343
