I drive a 95 zj and theres always been a noise coming from my rear dana 35 while driving offroad or hitting and bump. almost like a clunking noise but it doesnt sound like any of the gears, almost like the axle is jumping where the shock mounts maybe not be a tight fit or something. idk... but recently ive noticed while taking off slow i hear almost the same noise. ive rode with other people with zj's and most have the same noise. any help guys?

most of the time the pinion bearing goes out.

Put it up on jack stands and check for bearing play at the wheels and at the pinion. Wouldn't hurt to pull the cover and check for any obvious damage. Most of the time whining noise are gonna be a worn out bearing(s).

check your control arm bushings sometimes when bad on zj they move left to right and make the sounds your explaining cheap fix and will save ya tearing you c arm mounts off the unibody... More than likely this is your problem also check rear trac bar bushings they will do the same thing im about 99% sure on this especially if its stock arms and trac bar! hope this helps

ok maybe 90% sure on this...

Thanks for the help guys. ima go with checkin the bushings and what not first. I no some of my spider gears and chipped and i aint sure what else is going on in there right now but it aint that bad i dont think. Hope fully one of them things work

Just overhauled a d35 on a TJ with the same concern/problem. It was a 00 with 42k, only 42 thousand on it. It was indeed the pinion bearings. This one had no shims on the pinion shaft and there was no adjustments to be made on the carrier shims either. The fluid was full of metal shavings and whatnot. I found it easier ordering a rebuild kit from Mopar, the bearings are dead on the exact same measurement and there was no need for checking backlash and pinion depth. But that being said, don't tempt fate and always check. The worst part was getting the crush washer to collapse and checking the pinion preload torque.
