What would happen if someone took a d44 out of a 78 f150 that had 3.50 gears and kept the same carrier in it and re geared it to 4.10?

I know the break is at 3.92, I'm just wondering.

And no I'm not going to do this, it's already been done to an axle I'm about to open up and go through.

Ring and pinion would probably make just enough contact to strip the teeth. Unless they used a thick cut ring gear, then all is good if they knew how to set up gears.

Is there info out there for me to Id thick cut vs standard 4.10s?

I don't have any damaged teeth just a chunk out of the carrier and the cross pin is sloppy for the lock right. But it has low miles and just saw some muddy hunting trails so that may have saved it.

I guess I'll have to id what I have before or odering a new carrier.

I feel like I've seen ring gear spacers for this purpose, also weren't TJ rubicon gears all thick cut? Best bet would be to ID the numbers on the ring gear positively.

No thick cut reverse dana 44 gears available, being as it is a 78 f150 it would be a high pinion. You would never get the backlash within spec while maintaining proper pinion depth with the wrong carrier.
