i am trying to rebuild a chevy dana 44 front having a problem with the shim and bearings. Was wondering when trying to find the back lash am i going to have to remove the bearing to adjust the shims.

first time doing this :)

Yeah, set up bearings.

Use your old ones if they arent torn up after pulling them off the carrier.
You will have to enlarge the I.D. with a die grinder or similar so they can slip on and off the carrier easily during setup.

Then when you have the correct backlash and preload determined you can just press on the new bearings from your install kit.
