i bought a set of dana 44s the front has a mini spool in it and 5.13 gears. when i turn the pinyon it does not turn the gears as soon as i turn it mybe say half inch of play is that bad and what shoud i do about it is that something like adjusting the crush washer. thank you for your info.

That is pretty normal actually. As long as there is no play in the yoke the play you feel is not the same as measuring the actual backlash between the ring and pinion.

If you wanna make sure, pop the cover and verify backlash.

you may laugh but how do you check back lash with out the gauge thank you for the info i thought there for a second no one wanted to talk to me lol

There's always a "no tool available" way to check things out, backlash is no different.

Generally speaking, if you can hear it, feel it, but not actually see the backlash, you're in spec for the most part.

so then the main thing is there is no in and out and up and down move ment on the yokel so i can drive the crap out of it and not worry. is that right.

cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my set up is a mj with 4.0 aw4 dzna 300 and dana 44 out of a j10 fullsize with full spool in the back and mini spool the front and hydro assist. i thing i t will do good oh and i am making it a 4 link. i am trying to get pics.

Used this over the years as a quick check and for swapping carriers and has always served me well.
When I tell people about it, they look at me sideways though.
