So I picked up a 4.10 ring and pinion for a front Ford Dana 60 a while back. I’m reading that certain pinions were machined for shims and other for crush sleeves. How can I tell the difference?
Super Duty era HP 60 use a crush sleeve from the factory. Previous ones and aftermarket replacement gear sets use shims. The gears interchange. You just have to use CS on a CS pinion and shims on a pinion machined for shims.
An easy way to identify whether crush sleeve or shimmed is to look at the outer bearing surface on the pinion. If the bearing surface immediately terminates into a step where the pinion gets larger, it uses shims. If the bearing surface ends, there there is a section of unmachined surface before stepping up in diameter, it uses crush sleeves.
