debating on whether to use a dana 60 or a 14bolt in the rear of a zj with running 36 inch tsl's. i have a 60 but it has the 30 spline shafts and dont really want to upgrade it to 35. however the 14bolt yet while stronger is going to really kill ground clearance. Is the stock 30 spline 60 shafts strong enough to hold up to the 36's and what about with chromoly shafts? jeep has the 4.0 and is a automatic

With a 4.0/auto you should be fine with stock 30spline shafts. You can pick up chromoly 30 spline shafts for about $250 new last time I checked. Thats what I did, but I don't even carry the stockers for spares. I'm running a 4.6 stroker, 5.61 1st gear, 4:1 t-case, and 4.56 axle gearing, going into 36" TSLs, and the jeep weighs 5200lbs.

with the stock 30 spline shafts, you are probably okay up through 37s and possibly 38s depending on driving style.

and then there was a guy on jeepforum who had 42s on stock 30 splines and never broke them...but I think that is the exception to the rule.

with 36s, that 14b will probably take up a lot of ground clearance. these guys here talked me into a 14 bolt, though, however I am going with 37s/38s.

If 36s is what you are sticking with, 30 spline is fine!

I think the Dana 60 will be fine, but put a 14 bolt and be fine when you upgrade to 40+. You can shave the 14 bolt pretty good also.

sticking with 36's already been down the road of upgrading to larger tires on a different rig. Swore after that i would stick with 36s next time

gubni your mostly right. but also drivability. i want to be able to drive it the 3 hours to the beach or to work , or whereever my heart desires without it being a job...if that makes since

Go with the 14bolt and shave it. It won't be much bigger and its stronger than the 60.
