What could I expect to pay for a stock rear FF HP D60 out of a late 70's F250? Complete with brakes, lines, 4.10s, the usual. Does 200 sound about right?

It doesn't match my front gears, but neither does the 8.25 that's in there now. So I'm looking at buying axles to build and don't really know what a good starting price would be. There's a guy trying to sell me his for 200, but he thinks it's worth 800-1000 stock.

Sure it's a High pinion rear??

I haven't seen it, that's just what he said in his email.

The axle shaft is complete with drum brakes. If I can remember right the axle came out of a 1978 Ford F-250. I know the axle that I have is very desireable because I bought it according to JP magazines best rear Dana 60's article and would not buy an undesireable one. The axle has a good carier and gears, axle shafts, and housing. I think it is a 4.10 ratio and has a high pinion differential. I'm not sure of the spline count, but will find out tomarrow. I know this axle is worth $800-1000 unrebuilt and in good shape so it is a real steal for $200. I will check the seriel numbers tomarrow morning and do some research to make sure of the year and part config. I will get back to you in the morning when I find out more and thank you for your inquiry.

This axle is a full float rear axle. It comes complete and assembled with brakes, brake lines, shafts, all bearings, differential carrier with spider gears and ring and pinion with yolk. The axle is 4.10 gear ratio. Let me know if you are still interested.

That's his 2 emails. I'm thinking he may have gotten hosed on his original purchase, and now he's just trying to offload this axle he doesn't need.

I would pay no more than $200, $150 would be more like it.

Get pictures & that will prove thats it's not an high pinion.

I got mine for $125 delivered from a local junkyard (though that was a few years ago).

From his e-mails it sounds like he's using price comparisons for any D60, fronts included. I would pay no more than $200, assuming it's in good shape when you see it. I'd pull the drum brakes before and check for gear oil from a wheel seal leak. If the wheel bearings took a crap at some point, it could have ruined the surface where the bearings meet the spindle and that means it will never seal properly again.

$200 sounds reasonable for a ready to roll rear.

I want some of what he's smoking if he thinks its really worth $800-1000 unrebuilt. Sounds to me like he's quoting the high range for a desirable front...

Oh, get him to actually count the R&P teeth for you. The "I think its this ratio" has gotten me before and that's not a fun feeling.

pull a part gets 85 for them

A disc brake HP front will bring $1000-$1200 regularly,$200 for a 30 spline drum brake 60 rear axle is on the high end,if it's 16 spline it's not worth it.If it's a drum brake front I'd stay from it unless it was free.

I gotta agree with the rest of the guys, $200 is about the max I'd pay for a D60 rear. They were a very common axle in the dentsides, all the 250's came with rear 60's and the 79 350 4x4 came with a R D60. I've parted out or sold about 30 dentsides and never gotten more than $250 for the rear 60. A front HP60 is totally different story though, I sold one of those to a guy in Ohio once and got $1800 for it.

Cool, thanks for the advice ya'll. I won't bother emailing him about it anymore.

I didn't realize that.

Yep sure did...79 was the first year Ford produced 350 4x4, and they came with the HPD60 front and a D60 rear. You could get the HPD60 front in a 78 250 4x4 Sno-Fighter package, but those are harder to find than a true 79 350 4x4. I will also add that most 73-79 350 2by's came with a D70 in the rear. Looks almost identical to the D60, but the cover hangs a little lower and isn't flush.

We use a highpinion 60 in the challenger brooms at leeboy, but the application is front wheel drive thats why we went with a high pinion. Rear wheel drive is stronger as a standard cut gear.
