I searched and didn't come up with anything. Need a brain dump on dash cams. I am a gadget type of person. Never needed one before but thought it would be neat to have one. Looking for a good one that is simple to use and can be easily transferred between vehicles. Needs to have good video quality in bright sunlight. Don't need one with a GPS. What's the deal on dash cams?

I have a go pro. I don't know if it is made to record over videos when the card is full. It's also not a one button deal for the most part.

Smart phone, windshield mount/charger & a dash cam app?

Dash cams don't typically run 24/7. They are usually turned on (manually or automatically) to record an event, such as a traffic stop. A legit dash cam will have a DVR mounted in the trunk and these aren't cheap.

Just looking around I see that they have evolved into windshield mounted units that record onto SD cards and when the card is full it starts recording over top of what was previously recorded (the oldest clips). If you have an event that you want to save you must pull the card before it records over top of what you need to save. They turn on when with the press of a button or some turn on when you turn the key on. Most plug into the cig lighter.

It seems every Russian had one in their vehicle. Surely if they can afford them we can too.

You can get them on Amazon pretty cheap. I don't have a link, but my boss and I were looking at them for personal cars and they can be had for under 100 and pretty good quality. Several good examples on YouTube also.

I've been eyeballing this for a while, just haven't moved on it yet, more important things to spend money on I guess

My Dad bought one of the cheap ones, worked ok for a little while, pain to figure out due to instructions being nearly incoherent translated from Chinese ( presumably )

is probably what I'll get when I decide to pop for one.

I have one but I can't remember where (online) I bought it. It mounts with a suction cup and records on an SD card. It has a front and rear facing camera. I'll look at it tomorrow and see if o can figure out where it came from. I believe it was about $125.

I guess I'm behind the times. All the ones I've ever messed with were in police cruisers and had a fairly large DVR that mounted in the trunk. At the time, we were developing trigger mechanisms for the dash camera using input signals from ALPR cameras. Cool thread, carry on...

I bought a G1W off Amazon with 32 GB card for $73 shipped. It does 1080p, but you get a wider shot on 720p & 12 hours video. Cheap insurance I think. None of this he said she said garbage!
