This is going to be slow going, but I'm starting to tear down a Buick 225 I picked up from a board member. It's getting thrown in my 1970 CJ-5 for a little more get up and go! I just have to figure out how much money I want the rebuild to cost. Hope to have it in by summer.

I love seeing these motors! My buddy ran one for years in a glass bodied CJ5. I ran a 231 Buick in my yota for years too. They were both champs and took solid beatings for many years. They are simple and easy to work on for sure and can make decent power for sure.

I pulled one from a Skylark once, & had a friend rebuild it. No boring, just generally replaced all wearable items. Cost wasn't much on that build. Later I bought an Edelbrock intake & 390cfm Rochester 4bbl. I had it in a former Datsun converted truck. It turned a lot of rpm s, on the Highway, & Trail, & never failed me!

Mine also had a 390, a unilite distributor, Long tubes, and a small cam. It was hooked up to a 700r4 it was a great setup and wish I never sold it. Plenty of power and I could stand on the throttle for days and it asked for more. This was back in my mud days and it would sling it big time!

I'm a little tripped out at what I found tonight. It's torn down minus the crank and cam. The pan was full of big metal. Like .125 thick stuff! I don't know where the hell it came from. Nothing is broken. It did have aftermarket head gaskets. Maybe something in the top end came apart and they did a quickie fix and didn't pull the pan.

Check the skirts on the sleeves of the clyinder bores. I had the issue with mine when I first bought it and it half ass blew up on me when I was messing around before we pulled it out of the donor car (HUGE smokey burn out and too many rpm's) lol

How do the lobes on the cam look? A lot of material could come off of a rounded off cam.

Edit: and a distributer drive gear.

I didn't notice any of the skirts with issues, but I was trying to get it torn down quickly to help get the kids to bed. I will smoke it over a little closer tonight.

The lobes on the cam look nice and the drive gear is fine. The drive gear and skirts were my first thought. I will have more time this weekend to check everything over better.

meh, that'll never work.

Getting started again. The big brown sleigh stopped by today. I decided on the 225. It's at the machine shop waiting on my pistons that showed up today.

Have you located a rear dump exhaust manifold for the drivers side? Assuming the CJ was already on the Saginaw steering diet by 1970 (vs. that shatty Ross junk)?

whos punching the mota?
when you get done with this one, mines still in the chassis, in the pine thicket directly behind the farm house. help yourself to build it as well.

Old Ralph Brinkley in Lexington. We will see how they do.
