anyone familiar with these engines? thoughts on towing performance with one (14-15k lbs.)?

I haven't seen one in 20 years ( highschool), but they were big in buses and boats, where steady RPM is the norm for long durations.

They are a 2stroke diesel,
they leak oil
they are loud ( a very unique and angry sound under load, that you don't hear anymore, un-muffled is an awesome sound, from afar )
you can't baby them
they leak oil
if bound up, they can run backward, which is not a good thing ( pukes all the oil out the intake)
they leak oil
parts are available but can get expensive
Did I mention they leak oil ?
if you are serious about one, drive it till it is up to operating temp, there is a "draft tube" to the rear of the engine near the flywheel, watch for vapors, no vapor at idle engine should be pretty decent, nice huff coming from the tube, pass, it needs work.
They leak oil
operational sweet spot ( RPM) 1900-2200 rpm, lower and it'll eat itself.
unless you want to become intimately familar with it, I'd look for something more modern. neat for a play around thing you intend on working on, not so much if you really want to rely on it due to the age.

Do a google search, lots of info

they leak oil

Did you say that they leak oil lol

so do they leak oil?

i found another bus that would much better suit my non towing needs. the only thing i'm unsure of is how it would tow when i need it to. 77 mci mc8 with a 4 speed dana and 8v71.

sounds like i might be better off sticking with my original plan of a pusher rv with a C series cummins.

If you like the sound of and engine at work, Turn it up !!!

Man I miss this sound, used to hear it all the time when I was growing up, the highway was a mile from my house, and a slight grade, before the interstate took most of the traffic away.

Worked on many boats with the 71 series engine
The 8 71 was a beast...most common was the 6 71 cause of the size and weight of the 8 71 is huge
