DD TowRig Questions

Just looked up some more info on weighted tags. Private/regular tags are good up to 7,000 lbs. That includes the tow rig, trailer and the load. If you are keeping it at 7,000 lbs then you'll be fine on standard tags. However, I would think you'd be over 7k.
Here's all the motor vehicle laws: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/statutes/StatutesTOC.pl?Chapter=0020
EDIT: Fixed original typo, I said 9k and I meant 7k.
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-63.html
20-63(b) "The plate issued for vehicles licensed for 7,000 pounds through 26,000 pounds must bear the word "weighted"."

FWIW, the most weight you can buy for a "First in Flight" tag is 6000 lbs, and you must add this weight, most if all passenger tags are issued @ 4000 lbs, the reason is the state sells the weight @ 1000 lb increments, so if you wanted to haul anything between 6001-6999 lbs you would have to buy a 7000 lb "weighted" tag.

 whys that?

It's the law. Sort of.

IIRC, "property carrying vehicles" have to run weighted tags... but only pickups are considered to be property carrying vehicles.

If you look up Chapter 20 in the NC General Statutes, it's in there somewhere.

 whys that?

The simple answer is the weight laws only apply to "Trucks" , SUV's are categorized as station wagons/passenger car...

I think that's balogna.

I can buy a suburban which can tow a heck of alot more than my little dakota and I don't have to get it weighted and yet my dakota light truck needs a weighted tag

that's sillyness.
They should do it based on weight towed and allow for single use tag eceptions.

The guys that have brought tow rigs that SUVs might argue with ya on that one, I was fully aware of the law when I got mine, It was a deciding factor. When this one wears out I will most likely goto a Excursion.

yeah I know but its bull cookies that i didn't do enough research on the weighted tags.

ARGH!

I'm more mad at myself than anything.

anybody got an excursion with a cummins diesel in it they wanna sell

I thought about getting an Excursion and I still might, but my needs have changed, I have an 88 F250 7.5L extended cab, I've got 9k tags on it currently, I plan on upping the weight to 13k once uwharrie opens... the weight prices aren't toooo bad until you get over 13k, then it's like 50-100 for each addition 1k, maybe not that much but its a considerable difference... and I think 13k will cover whatever I need to haul currently... My plan is to get a slide in truck camper then pull my rig behind on a trailer... but the camper is still a few years out...

Anywho... the state has to generate funds one way or another, and no one ever side out hobby/sport was cheap :huggy:
