I recently swaped my 89 toyota over from efi to carb (long story ) well now i got a dead ground , this didnt happen till my alt quit and i put another one on it and it dont work but half the time. so i thought it may be grounding out inside it so i unhooked all the wires to it and didnt help . mean while some how i got it to only draw 8-9 volts instead of 12 like it was . any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I got a can of gas in one hand and a match in the other. (bonfire)

odds are the new alternator is crap. I went through 3 remans before I gave up and had a custom GM 1 wire built. I mean a ground is a ground. It just hooks to the body and frame and the negative terminal on the battery.
