I have an old HP Notebook that I used as my laptop for years. I regularly use my trusty old PC so a laptop is used only temporarily. I'm getting a new knee in a few weeks and will be need something portable to peck on while recuperating so looking to get info retrieved off of this one and put on another. My local PC Paramedic will retrieve my info, put it on the rebuilt one for about $350.00
I wouldn't know how to go about retrieving info from the black screen laptop and don't want to spend a thousand bucks on a new one. I've used these guys before and service was great.
What recommendations would y'all have to offer?

If you want to save money, and are willing to put in the time finding the files yourself, you can pull the hard drive and put it into a USB enclosure so its functionality an external drive, then plug that into your PC/New laptop, and transfer whatever you want.
The kits should be $50 or less. This is exactly what they are going to do.

If you have a PC, you can plug the hard drive right into the SATA bus, don't even need an enclosure. I mirrored a laptop hard drive this way a couple of weeks ago.
