My parents are looking to buy a used car out of state (New York state to be exact). The price is $36,490, and the dealer is saying the total out the door with taxes and fees will be $37165.
It breaks down as follows:
$36490 vehicle
$370 NC taxes
$110 Registration fees
$75 documentation fee
$20 temp plate

Its a reputable Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer, but those fees just seem to low to me, and I don't want any suprises. I thought the NC HUT was more like 3%, which works out to about $1100.

RUST!!!!!!!! Nothing useful to add...

In nc
3% tax on purchase price
temp tag here is a dollar. There doc fee is low. U will also have to pay property tax if they want a non temp reg. Card. I'm guessing they are charging property tax instead of sale tax.
sales tax should be 1094.70

Yeahyeahyeah, but it's a 2014 With less than 20k miles...
Well, I've met your parents and know you well enough to know they wouldn't buy a rust bucket so I figured I would try to start a big argument. Fail.

sales tax should be 1096.95 Tax is charged on the sales price PLUS the doc fee now. New rules. and a temp tag is $1 Not sure what they're gaining by being wrong about the tax, unless they are changing the price on the bill of sale to the dmv.

Sales tax on doc fee is only on doc fee in nc, at least this what my girls at dmv said. Since its a state law they can't collect sales tax on doc fee in another state

ahh....i missed the first part about buying it in ny
No worries. I found out their state law is $75 doc fee. Parents cooled off on it and haven't made a decision.
