Uwharrie ranger dies in motorcycle accident

SPARTA — The district ranger with the Uwharrie National Forest died in a motorcycle accident Saturday 29 October near Sparta, according to a preliminary report from the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Officials confirmed Deborah Walker died in the 3 p.m. accident, which occurred on U.S. 21 about 11 miles south of Sparta in Alleghany County.

No further information was immediately available.

Walker was assigned to the Uwharrie National Forest in 2005 after 16 years in California and New Mexico. She graduated from N.C. State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science, with a concentration in forestry.
