[Dec 28, 2012] Pott Mtn VA Before it Closes? (New Castle, VA)

Great day, one of my favorite trail rides ever. Glad I got to wheel with all of you and look forward to doing it again in the future!

Pictures Zac took from yesterday.

I didn't realize Nick went over the last obstacle before "The Stacks". I was wondering were you all went! that is one of the tougher obstacles on the trail. Impressive!

Had a great time. First time I have rode Potts Mtn. and it was covered in snow! I had a lot of fun. :D A great group of guys to ride with too.

The LEO that talked with us was Officer Price. I have never meet him. I had heard he was a real SOB. I will say that I did not get that impression and in fact I though he was a nice guy to converse with. Its good to know we have good folks like that protecting our wildlife and wilderness.

When i saw him sitting at the trail head I was a little more than concerned. Not validated! I really think he was just there to make sure we knew the rules and that our rigs were prepared for the conditions.

Do they actually check to make sure each vehicle is street legal? My Samurai has a tag on it, but it is 3yrs out of date due to inspection.

The LEO happened by as we were unloading the only trailered rig at The Pines overflow. I was walking up the highway to my ride when he pulled up beside me and chatted a second. Asked if we were all tagged, insured, etc. I said yes, we knew the drill and were legal. When we got to the trailhead a couple of miles further up he was waiting on us. He didn't check registrations or insurance cards but he did eyeball the tags, gave us his speech and talked about his friend the judge. He was courteous, professional and helpful but serious. The thing I found funny was that in his speech he stressed several times that the proper name for the trail was "Jeep road" not Jeep trail, but all of the official Forest Servce signs say "Jeep trail". :)

I have been wheeling Potts for many years and that was the first time I have seen any LEO's up there. I have ran into NFS Rangers before and our club takes the Rangers through from time to time to check the trail over since they have nothing that will get them through there.

The "Jeep Road" thing was new to me as well. I think he/they are trying to stress that all public road rules apply up there. Officer Price has a reputation of writing people up for even small violations and I have heard horror stories about him. This was my first encounter with the officer and i will say that I found him to be very professional and courteous. You can bet that if any of our rigs had been out of the realm of being legal he would have at lest pointed it out. He is a "by the books" kind of guy. I'm glad we have folks like Officer Price protecting our wildlife and wilderness. Like he said, "I have the internet" and I'm sure he monitors all of the Jeep and off road sites. He probably knew we going to be up there and what time that we were going to be there most likely.

I have found that with any LEO, you get back what you give. We were all courteous and professional with him as well. That speaks volumes and you all represented yourselves and this site/community very well.

Thanks for the replies. I'll make sure whatever I bring up there, when I finally get to go, is legal.

It looks like I missed a great time.

Looks like a good time. I want to do some snow wheeling so bad.

Good time was a bit of an understatement. there was a lot of :burnout:<--- this in the snow. If I had to describe it I would say imagine the hill climb on Daniel, add snow and make every boulder slick with ice frozen over them. The skinny pedal was everywhere and I am definitely not the one to spin tires like crazy. Exciting and intense are some better adjectives highlighting the day.
