Just wanted to get everyones imput on this. I Bought a set of axles (HPD44 & 9") about 9 months ago and yesterday I finally got my truck where it will drive under its own power (Front Wheel Drive). Once i get it out in the driveway it is apparrent that the front Detroit is F*&!ed. Only pulling on one tire. Anywho, now that im past the point of disgust, I guess I need to start figuring out what to do with the Detroit. Heard there was a rebuild kit available? Ive done alittle research & cant find anything on it. Where do i get parts? Who have you guys dealt with, whos the cheapest, etc. Is a kit available or can i just buy the parts that i need? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I thought the same thing, but when i drive forward the passenger side shaft doesnt spin. I can put a pry bar thru the yoke and roll my truck forward and the shaft wont spin. However if you jack the tire's off the ground and spin the tires or even start the truck and let out the clutch both tires spin the same direction? I'm not sure what the deal is, i'm just assuming the worst because that's my luck. Also some history on the axle: I bought the axle with a broken long side shaft. A stock shaft was installed and so i could see if the detroit was blown, both tires would still spin, so i had no way of knowning till now that it was busted.

Detroit Locker

I have 4 of them in a box, all with the same problem. Detriot Locker will not sell parts at a reasonable rate and I have found no other source. Go to an Aussie locker or ARB.
Detroits are strong, but they will break and are expensive.
I will never own another one.

A common problem with Detroit lockers if that they can fail when a shaft breaks. The reaction forces of the shaft breaking cause the damage to the unit. Most people who experience this end up finding that the parts to repair them cost more than just going another route.

If it were me I'd take it apart and try to find the problem. You may be able to have a local machine shop fabricate the part for a rasonable rate. Don't tell them it's for use in a car as that is generally too much liability for them.

X2.

Tear down that detroit and find the broken part(s) and replace them. Hell try and find people with blown 44 detroits and buy some parts from them. From looking at the parts diagrams they don't seem to complicated.

Hurry and get your truck running before I end up having to sell my POS.:driver:
