Detroit Locker, this is probably a stupid question

I'm about to change the rear axle under my rig to a dana 44, the front is already a 44. The axles I'm looking at have a detroit locker in the rear and open in the front. I was thinking about switching the front gears into my front axle and completely switching the rear axle. I have an amc 20 in it now.

Here's my stupid question,

Would it be better to put the detroit locker in the front and a full spool in the rear? I normally use it for mudbogging in a straight pit but what i'm reading on the lockers is that the detroit may make it easier to turn on hard ground without unlocking the hubs.

Of your option listed (a Detroit and a spool), definitely put the Detroit in the front and the spool in the rear

should be able to swap the diffs front to back no problem .... And if you need to buy a D44 spool, lemme know, I have one I could sell ya.

I wouldn't run a Detroit in the front. When you break a shaft or u-joint, the backlash will break the Detroit, and you can't buy parts for a Detroit.

I would sell the Detroit, weld the rear, and put a Lock Right in the front.

and you can't buy parts for a Detroit.

That is not correct. We sell parts to repair Detroits all the time. It sometimes takes a bit to get parts but we can get any replacement parts you may need.

I would run the Detroit in the front and spool in the rear. You should be fine. Is the new rear axle a 6 lug waggie setup? You might want to get some chromoly shafts built.

Before I went to Moser, in my 20, I had broke 3 rear axles. Never had a Detroit failure. Present Detroit, has 20+ years on it ! Another Detroit, I had 6-7 years in a rear 44, before selling vehicle. Several guys have said they have broke Detroits. Guess, I never had enough power!:D

Sorry for the delay ...been away for a few days
It's for 3.92 and up (I had 4.56 ring installed on it)
How's 100 sound? ... I'm pretty sure I paid 200 for it.

the detroit locker looks like this one, I'm trying to figure out how to get the c clips out of it can anyone tell me what to do? it doesn't have the plate where you take the allen bolt out and the c clips come out through the plate in the center......

good thing i tore the axles down. I only checked the rear for the locker and counted the gears when i bought them, 4.10 gears and detroit locker in the rear, when i tore the front down it had 41/11 gears whick comes out to roughly 3.73 gears, I'm sure that would have worked wonderful together

I need all three of the gears in a detroit locker. i have a 4.0 ranger running 39.5s. and the teeth broke off and ruined my pinion.

More than likely, the pinion went first and the shock load took out the gears in the Detroit. Send Zubz a PM, though. He should be able to get you the parts, or know who has them.
