Does anyone know if DH Griffin in Greensboro still sells small amounts of scrap steel or been there recently? I got a new welder and need some stuff to practice on and read on here some folks have been able to browse their yard. I'll give them a call too, but just wondering what people think of them for this purpose.

Yep, their yard changes depending on what they bring in. It has been a few months since I was there. But you can usually find some scrape to practice on. Just browse the yard, find what you want, then go inside the little building and tell them what you found and pay for it. Last time I was there I got a couple 6 ft. pieces of 1/2" steel plate and some 10" wide channel.

Thanks. I'm going to hit them next week I hope. I got a few pieces today at JD recyclers in Durham. They charged 50 cents a lb. A bit high for scrap from what I can tell but at least I got something to play with. Geezus, one can't get new metal it seems the prices are crazy high especially for easily available stuff at TSC or lowes and the like. JD had alot of big stuff, way bigger than I could even think about tossing in the back of the truck. I'd like to find some lighter stuff, up to maybe 1/4 inch. Really looking forward to learning how to weld a bit. I got a new mig welder so am ready to go.

It's always crazy high at tsc and the like. I only buy that stuff if i have to make small brackets, or any artsy stuff
