Diesel FJ40, 1974FJ

Nice build and rebuild. Looks great!

Off topic but you any relation to / know a Jon Hovis? I grew up playing baseball against him and last time I saw him he was driving a green or blue FJ while playing for the Gastonia Grizzlies.

Jonathan Hovis is my older brother. He is still daily driving his smurf blue 77 fj40....

so its been awhile since ive posted any updates...
Ive since completed the hardtop and placed glass in it. The raingutter should have been replaced but i decided against it for now...
The following photos show the completion of the front bumper/winch combo and the rock sliders. I have also started the rear tire carried and beadlock wheel. The wheels are not complete i just stuck the ring on the wheel to see if i like the grayish color, which i DO! im almost finished with the tire/cooler carrier but have a few minor upgrades to make. More photos to follow in the near future as i start to build the rear quarter panel tube rock gaurds, i do plan to wheel this thing some you know...

You can see the bend i put into the swing arm right off of the hinge to allow the rear quarter panel tubing to connect to the bumper behind the tire carrier.

This arrier is very stable with all this weight on it, much more than the previous one i built. I owe alot of that to the locking handle.

Update!
I'm very close to being satisfied enough to attend a few wheeling events in the near future if work allows....

first up....battery: I have always had the battery in the rear behind my drivers seat. I never bolted it down because i was wanting to build a small tool box around it but couldn't come up with anything i was willing to build at this point. The battery i had was a massive truck battery with 1,100+ CCA that i did not want to squeeze under the hood, it was ugly too. I decided to upgrade to dual Odyssey 925s and a dual isolated battery kit from 12VoltGuy. Really neat and clean kit! Dont knock my wiring as i still have to remove the top battery hold downs and make some adjustments and reduce some weight on them too. I never took a picture of the dual battery box i built but i will when i take the batteries out next time im at the shop for the weekend. These batteries have plenty of starting power and my 4bt only requires one 12v source for my fuel solenoid while running. The 12VoltGuy kit allows me to switch from the house battery to both batteries and allows both to charge. My winch and other accessories are wired to my aux battery. I will show more photos of this when i finish my center console in the cab.

I had a '77 FJ40 painted the same red and white. I dropped a 350 SBC in it using an advance adapters kit. I loved it, but this thing puts it to shame! Great build.
