im going to look at a old school burb with a 6.2 soon. ive allways heard that they were not so good motors? i dont know anything (well much) about chevy/GMC diesel's so my question is......

1. are they decent motors
2. what should i look for/expect...

i had an 85 with the 6.2. It was a great truck, and compared to a 350 equiped 'Burb of the same year, It had plenty of power. Also the 4.10 gears, 14bolt rear w/limited slip didn't hurt it either. My family put nearly 300k on it before we sold it due to it rusting out.

The 6.2 NA is a great motor, but gets a bad rap due to the power level of current turbo diesels. It's 6.5 turbo cousin is not great and very expensive to repair, GM tried to polish a turd, so to speak, and the results showed.

If you're looking for a daily driver that gets 20 mpg and can tow a jeep/yota to the trails, then go for it. but don't bitch when a guy with a CTD or powerstroke passes you.

6.2's were great engines. But using a 6.2 today, your experience may vary....they are pretty old now.

But back in the day, they were solid, reliable engines.

If it's a good deal, pick it up and swap in the Optimizer 6500. It's the 6.5l turbo diesel redesigned by AM General, direct replacement for the 6.2 but with more power and no head and block cracking problems. Still doesn't have the same power or aftermarket support of some of the other diesels, but it's a good reliable engine.

theres nothing wrong with a 6.2, i got one in my burban running 38s on it. and drive the hell out it never had any problems. the main thing is watching the temp gauge. but like they said it wont keep up with a ctd or a powerchoke. overall they are good motors though
