wasup , i got an xj cherokee with an engine on its last legs and was wandering on doing a diesel swap , i i beleive its brandon with the diesel buggy , but i dont dont know what kinda engine he has or where he got it or how hard it is to make one run. so any help would be great.

brandon has a cummins 4bt in his buggy... tha main issue you would have in putting such a large diesel in an XJ IMO would be the weakness of hte unibody when subjected to the amount of torque and weight on the drivetrain... Also you might run into cooling issues, as well as streetability issues if you still wanna drive it on the road...

you might be better off with a smaller diesel if you are set on it, such as the liberty or a VW diesel

4.0 are a dime a dozen just swap a new one in. Why would you want to go to the trouble of trying to figure it out? The amount of work and fabrication is mind boggleing. The unibody would have to be serously stiffened IMHO!

Yep I second just replacing. I got one off here for $200 and they gave me the computer and everythng from the torque converter to the Serpentine belt.

I've done a few diesel swaps into jeeps, a landcruiser and sammy

Definatly cheaper to put another 4.0 in or even a 350 or 4.3 vortec

let me know if i can help you with anything

there were some Xj's that came with diesels you might try one if those. or one from a liberty
You do not want those xj's. The diesels were maily export, canada and mexico would be your best bet. IMSC it was a renault diesel and we all know of the imfamous transmission from that part of the world! :shaking:

what about swapping one into a toyota pick up that has a true frame. i have a 88 2wd toy that id like to go turbo desiel just to make some mad power and maybe some decent gas mileage.

guy i met at uwharrie had some sort of nissan 5 cyl diesel if i remember right swapped into his yj. he said he wishes he would have kept the 4.0 for daily driving duty..... with such a low operating rpm you would need to either regear to a numerically lower gear to make it highway friendly which would sacrifice off road performance.... or you could keep your off-road friendly gears and be stuck with a 45 mph top speed :)

-Erik <--- would be happy to hear that their was another jeep with a lower top speed than mine, hehe
