Oil changes are not as often but on my ctd it takes twice as much oil. So that is a wash but as far as tires and things like that they are more expensive 1 because I have larger tires 2 because it is a E class tires. Tags were more expensive because I went from a standard passenger tags to a weighted tag because most diesels are not legal with just standard passenger tags so when I switched I went ahead and ponyed up and put the tags on it that I thought would cover me and my load which was 20,000 pound tags. Most people do not need that high of rating if only towing small trailer with landscaping equipment or small offroad rig and trailer.
My wife's car is an '03 Mazda 3 and it consistently gets 32+ driving 75-80mph on road trips..
