Difference between a 3/4 and 1 ton truck

The dana 80 in the rear of my 96 dodge 2500 is FF. From what I have read, the D80 was put behind the NV4500 V10s and diesels. Sounds like adding a couple leafs to the pack in the rear of my truck, and poof, I have a single wheel 3500 haha.

As far as I know, Dodge did not make a 3500 single wheel truck till the 99-up change. I had a 97 2500 diesel with the camper package with overload springs and was told that it had the same springs as a 3500, they just didnt make a single wheel 3500 truck in 97.

Can it also be possible that the 2500's differ from the 3500's in that the 3500's come standard with a hydroboost system and the 2500's don't? That's all dependent on gas vs. diesel, but I'm thinking the 2500's had a vacuum booster with a gas engine and the 3500's had the hydraulic booster. I don't know, just spitballing.
had a 1998 3/4ton Burb with Gas motor (454) that had Hydroboost

As Shawn mentioned there seems to be more differences based on engine choice than model choice. For Dodge the V8s got smaller axles than the V10s or the CTDs, and in the early 90s the transmissions and transfer cases were different. And for some reason Dodge didn't offer single wheel 3500s in the 94-02 body style.

Well that's not a 3500 now is it :flipoff2: Seriously though, the single wheel 350s with the CTD were uncommon. It's cool that your dad has one.

So I did some more research and the V10 and CTD with manual transmissions in 94-02 were essentially single wheel 3500s, as they received the D80 rear axle.

I believe on the OBS Ford's the frames were the same, the differences were front axle and driveshaft, taller blocks on the rear axle, and different cab/box configurations. Maybe others but that's all I can think of.

X2. Frames were the same. Front axle was a TTB 44 or 50 depending on engine in a 250, 60 in a 350. 10.25 Sterling rears. Can't remember when they started using the Sterlings but the 10.25 ran until 97. 2" blocks in 250, 4" in 350. RCLB was 250 or 350, ECSB and ECLB was 250 only, CCSB was 250 only, CCLB was 350 only. Brakes were the same. All vac in 250/350. The only OBS Fords to have hydroboost were F-Super Duty trucks. They had disc front and rear with a parking brake on the transmission. I-beam front axle. All were 2wd and had 10 lug 16" wheels.

As far as Chevy goes, there were a lot of odd combinations. I used to work with a guy that had a 2500 4x4 that was 6 lug with a SF 14 bolt.

Dodge did not have a single wheel 3500 from 94-02. As stated above, Auto trucks came with a D70-2U rear and manual trucks came with D80. They started back in 2003 and the only difference from 03-12 was overload springs in the rear on the 3500 SRW. It was a $500 option in 2005.

My buddy had a 90's something Chevy/gmc 1500 WT at his shop not long ago with a diesel engine in it. Said it was a stock truck. Didn't know that was ever an option.

From what I've seen, the second gen dodges 3500 had over load leafs, rear sway bar, and a Dana 80. The 2500s had no rear sway bar, no overloads, and a Dana 70.

Diesel six speed 2500s got the 80, overloads, and sway bar.

Learned my new thing for the day. Limited knowledge on the subject. Just what I noticed while hunting for a new tow rig.
