Difference between chevy 4x4 and z71

Stickers, possibly different shocks.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...

Stickers, different shocks (so they say), aluminum skid plates instead of plastic, and a few thousand dollars in price. It's just an optional RPO code that GM started and for some reason, people went crazy over them. They also made some with Z85 decals on them (towing package) and I'd guess that ZR2 (S series trucks and blazers) was an RPO code too.

Right it was a package/option deal.
Just like anything else.
The exact differences vary by year. I think in the late 90s some of the Z71 got an external trans cooler..some years they have an extra skid plate under the TC etc.

it depends on the year, external trans and engine oil coolers, bilsteins for 90's, later ones got delco shocks, most through the years had aluminum skidplates, larger air filter, 3.73 gears with a gov-lock(g80 option). once again, the stickers were probably the most significant part of the package

PAGING RICKY B.

I've owned both. The only thing I could tell was different was skid plates & shocks.

Hell, my truck was a base model 4x4 "work truck". Reg cab, long bed, small V8 (4.8, which was actually the standard motor for the 1500 trucks, the 5.3 was an option, but more of those were made for obvious reasons), 5 speed, manual shift transfer case, and no carpet. The RPO sticker in the glove box lists Z85, G80, and a higher GVWR than normal. Whoever bought it new didn't have to fork over the extra dough for the stickers though :D

I haven't seen many 99 & up GM trucks without the G80, regardless of the options. It just makes sense I guess.

Everyone one forgot the mention this.... Z71 comes in 2wd and 4x4........ 4x4 only comes in 4x4 lol

Only since the new body came out in 07.5 year. Before then if it was a z71 it had to be 4x4

That's true on the trucks but I think the suburbans and tahoes came in 2wd also

Nothing worthwhile

Z-71 used to be optional package (on 4x4 only)- skid plates, Bilstein shocks, G-80 rear diff, and the all important stickers! That was on the 90's trucks. I'd imagine on more current stuff it's likely pretty similar. On the round body Tahoes and Suburbans (2001+) it was a trim level with the same stuff as just listed but also some special body cladding, serial roof rack and special wheels. (also on the late 90's to 2000 (before the round body style) Z-71 package was on Tahoes and had body matched paint on grille, bumpers, and fender flares, and had a brush guard with a diesel model front bumper with auxiliary lights in the holes and special wheels) Like this (bug guard is aftermarket):
