I have a 1995 S-10 that has a 4 cyl that is mated to a 2WD T5 (according to the research I have done, the T5 was used up until 1996 or so in 2WD 4 cyl pickups). I'm hoping to one day install Sky's solid front axle kit and convert this to 4WD. I know the 4 cyl is a bit anemic, but it works OK, so I'll probably keep it.
Anyway, I was thinking about when the time comes, to swap in a T5 and Dana 300 combo out of a 80's Jeep CJ. Is there any reason that this shouldn't work? I would imagine that I'd keep the bell-housing and clutch from the S-10 and bolt it to the Jeep T5. Things are NEVER as easy as they sound in my head, though.....
