I am looking into getting new shocks for my 96 2500 Ram. In doing so I see that some manufacturers have front shocks for 8800 GVRW trucks and then a different front shock for those under 8800. Is the mounting different or is it solely for the extra weight?

Just different valving for more weight, I'd guess.

I believe Croatan_Kid is right, just different valving for weight. Also, might want to look to make sure whether the shocks you are looking at are for gas or diesel application for the same reason. I know my Hemi's shock valving is a good bit different from the valving used in Cummins applications by the same shock manufacturer in the same shock body.

Main difference is valving to match which ever springs came from the factory on the truck.
