i have an 87 xj and the passender side heat hight is very dim and driver side is fine i have the light up grade that take bulds and not the whole headlight

The bulb could be faulty. You should check voltage at the pigtail where it plugs into the headlight.

what do u mean it has the headlight UPGRADE on it that looks like the reg headlights BUT u put a 9000 series bulb in it

Probably a dual filament 9004 bulb. Pull it out and look at it, or take your jeep by autozone and see if they can figure it out.

the lights in my TJ screw up from time to time...I attribute it to extreme cold after a rain or it gets wet..

One of the lights is dim, the other is bright as hell and the High Beam indicator is just faintly on...

Goes away after a day or two...maybe thats whats wrong with your XJ?

thanks again for all the input

Check the grounds and check the headlight switch. You may get a reading of 12 volts at the headlight without the bulb hooked up but when the headlight is pluged in the voltage may drop due to the load. Most likely the headlight switch has gone bad because most of these headlight upgrade kit pull more amps than the stock switch can handle. The signs of this are slight melting or a brown color of the wire plugs at the switch and at the headlight.
